Mr. David Perry, center, is speaking to the group of educators. All teachers, Mrs. Kim Buryanek, high school principal, and Mr. Ryan Kramer, elementary principal of West Sioux Schools and student teachers from Dordt College and Northwestern College participated in an Instructional Skills Workshop held on Monday through Thursday, April 26 through April 29, at the Hawarden Community Center. Dr. Jean Anastasio and David Perry of Syracuse, New York, were the presenters of this outstanding workshop.
Some outcomes that participants learned are increased student time on task, improved student behavior, improved student performance, insights into and options for classroom organization, and motivation of students and classroom management techniques that work.
The participants practiced “new” techniques several times each day and on the last day of the workshop each person taught a mini lesson to a group of four “students” applying strategies that Anastasio and Perry taught to the group.
The APL Workshop was very beneficial to the teachers to apply knowledge learned at the end of this school year and again this fall. A lot of these strategies will be carried out district wide to maintain consistency and student success.
The teachers want to sincerely thank Gary Tucker and the City of Hawarden for allowing West Sioux to use the facility. Thank you to the City of Hawarden and Pam Meade, West Sioux cook, for providing the delicious breakfast each day.
