IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS AND DATES – PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS
- Wednesday, May 21 – Last day of school. One hour early dismissal. Report Cards will be sent home with the students.
- Summer Computer Camp enrollment forms will be sent home next week. Camp will run in the mornings from May 27 to June 30. Please consider enrolling your student(s).
Thank you to all the Grandparents who were able to take part in Grandparents Day. The students enjoyed getting ready for their visit and having them here to share in their school day.
Next week will be the last week for spelling homework. The last spelling test will be on Friday, May 16. There will be one more week of math homework also. Some students have increased their scores each week - Practice does make perfect! Keep up the good work practicing the math facts all summer so your child can enter 3rd grade ready to go.
Hawarden Public Library visited with the 2nd grade about the summer reading program that runs June 2nd - July 9th. This is a wonderful program to help keep your child reading all summer. We would highly recommend registering your child in the program.
Wednesday, May 14 is our Sioux Falls zoo trip. If your child has not brought in the $3 admission money please do so on Monday. We will be having a picnic in the park and everyone will need to have a sack lunch and a drink. Pay attention to the weather forecast so your child is dressed appropriately - wear comfortable walking shoes - no flip flops or sandals.
WOW! This year has gone by very quickly and we've accomplished much. We will be watching all the great things this class will be doing in the future!

3rd Grade
News
Spelling- We are working on the months and days of the week. Some students have passed this test and others have not. Please work with your child if they have not passed the test.
Math- We continue working on division facts. We are also doing some extra math. This includes Geometry and Measurements, Fractions and temperature and we will test the students with the Diagnostic Math test. We will see the gains they have made this year in third grade.
Social Studies- We will test the students on the states and then send home the results. This will be attached to their report cards and it will show the states that they can now recognize.
Health- Both classes will complete a chapter covering drugs and alcohol. We will not test over this chapter.
English- We will finish our work over adverbs. We will then work on a poetry unit. Each student will memorize a Shel Silverstein poem and recite it to the class. They will be asked to have a prop or dress up for this presentation.
Map Skills- Every student will complete their map skills book and all Weekly Readers. This will be completed in the classrooms.

1. Joining the public library's summer reading program.
2. Going to computer camp!
3. Joining your town's summer rec program.
***Thank you for sharing your child with us this year in third grade. We have had a very successful year and we wish you and your family a safe and happy summer.
4th Grade News
Reading: Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Lawton's reading groups will be reading the story Teammates. All AR points are due on Friday, May 16.
Spelling: There will be a spelling test given next week. 4L-test on Thurs., May 15 4B - test on Fri. May 16.
English: Mrs. Lawton's class is finishing the unit on punctuation and capitalization. A test will be given covering Unit 5 on Friday, May 16. Mrs. Brown's class will be giving their desert report presentations May 13-16.
Social Studies: Fourth graders have been studying the history of the Pacific West region, and how the region exists today. There will be an open book test over this information on Thursday, May 15.
Science: We are finishing the unit on the Digestive System. An open book review will be given to the fourth graders on Thursday, May 15.
Math: Our students are completing Unit 7 covering various division strategies. Chapter 7 test will be given on Wednesday, May 14. Review pages can be found on pgs. 426-431.
Reading Rodeo Party: All 4th graders who successfully completed the Reading Rodeo requirements for the year will be watching a movie on Monday, May 12. Students may bring a small snack and a small drink to have during the movie.
5th Grade
News
Science: One class tested over the Drug Awareness unit Friday and the other will on Monday. We will finish our year with a unit on Measurement.
Mrs. Weerheim’s Reading: We have finished Call It Courage and will be working on dioramas next week.
Math: We are finishing up on our Fractions Unit. Please keep reviewing multiplication facts at home with your child as this helps in many different areas of math.
Social Studies: For the remainder of the year we will be studying the Revolutionary War. The students will be keeping a journal to write about each day’s activities.
English: Students have just completed a letter-writing unit. In their writing portfolios the students added a friendly letter, business letter, and an invitation. To finish out the year we will be writing directions and other practical pieces of writing.
Mr. Yost’s Reading: We will be reviewing all of our vocabulary words from this year. The students will be putting together a vocabulary wordbook that they can add too in future classes. I am going to encourage each student to visit his or her wordbook during the summer.
