KINDERGARTEN
Reading Readiness: This week we met Ms. J with her jingle, jingle, jacket. We’ve been discussing things that start with J and the J sound. Ask your child to name and write things that begin with J. Remember: Your child may use invented spelling (that is writing words the way they sound) We will be meeting the last two letters of the alphabet (Y and Z). Since your child knows nearly all the letters of the alphabet, help them write lists, words and write own stories (sentences). We will continue to be reading lots of material to prepare your child for 1st grade.
We have been working on subtraction sentences (writing and solving them). Have your child practice using manipulatives, including pennies at home. Please review coins and the value of each. Let them count your change. Our next unit will involve counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s.
Remember that this is the last month for Reading Rodeo.
Unless it snows, your child will no longer need to bring snow pants and snow boots.
FIRST GRADE
Reading-Next week we will be reading “A Friend for Little Bear”. A little bear living alone on an island finds that he must decide what is truly important and what is not. We will be learning about the /oo/ sound in words like room, spoon, cool, etc. Vocabulary words to practice are: these, called, pulled, only, friend.
The following week will be reading the story “New Shoes for Silvia.” When Sylvia receives a present of red shoes, she can’t wait to wear them. But she must learn to be patient until her feet have grown big enough to fit the new shoes. We will be learning about the /ar/sound in words like farm, star, charm, etc. Vocabulary words include: every, once, or, took, morning.
