PBS Training

The middle school has started implementing the Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) system. The elementary buildings began implementing PBS during the 2006-2007 school year and have experienced great success with their efforts. The middle school is continuing the program. It will not look the same as the elementary program. It will be geared toward middle school students.
The PBS team members include Melinda Bak, Janna Kingma, Holly Liston, Brenda Dekkers, Traci McManaman, Kim Buryanek, Dawn Hummel, and Mary Schiefen. PBS at the middle school will focus on training staff to effectively implement PBS, recognizing student’s positive behavior, and decreasing discipline referrals. The object of the PBS program at West Sioux will be to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm.
Elements of the PBS program are already being taught. Teachers are using the ten-minute advisory period each day to discuss how students will meet the new expectations. The middle school has adopted the slogan: Falcon Five Equals Pride. The staff hopes to instill a sense of pride in each student as they learn the new components of the program. The PBS team believes these are all things that are vital to creating a better, more positive environment at the middle school.
